AWS AIF-C01 vs SAA-C03: which AWS certification should you take first?

These two AWS certifications get lumped together because they're both "entry-ish" and both popular right now. But the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) serve very different people and goals. Pick based on your direction, and the choice becomes obvious.

The quick verdict

• Choose AIF-C01 if you're new to AWS, come from a data / business / product background, or want to speak credibly about AI and ML on AWS without going deep on infrastructure.
• Choose SAA-C03 if you're heading into a cloud engineering, DevOps or architecture role. It's the cert hiring managers recognise and the natural spine of an AWS career.

AIF-C01: the foundational AI credential

The AI Practitioner is a foundational-level exam. It tests conceptual understanding of AI, machine learning and generative AI on AWS — what services like Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker are for, how to think about responsible AI, prompt engineering basics, and where ML fits into a solution. You are not asked to build or train models.

• Level: Foundational.
• Passing score: 700 / 1000 (scaled).
• Feels like: a concepts-and-vocabulary exam. Breadth over depth.
• Best for: analysts, product managers, developers pivoting toward AI, and anyone wanting an approachable first AWS cert.

Because it's conceptual, AIF-C01 is very achievable in two to three weeks of study, even without deep AWS experience. That accessibility is exactly why it's become a popular on-ramp.

SAA-C03: the career-anchor architecture exam

Solutions Architect Associate is a different animal. It's an associate-level exam that expects you to design resilient, cost-effective, secure architectures across the major AWS services — compute, storage, networking, databases, security. The questions are scenario-heavy: you're given requirements and asked for the best-fit design.

• Level: Associate.
• Passing score: 720 / 1000 (scaled).
• Feels like: a judgement exam. Multiple answers "work" — you pick the one that best fits cost, resilience and security constraints.
• Best for: anyone in or moving toward a cloud engineering / architecture role.

SAA-C03 rewards real understanding of service trade-offs. Expect four to eight weeks of study for most people, more if AWS is new to you.

If you want both, what order?

Two sensible paths, depending on who you are:

Coming from data, analytics or product

Start with AIF-C01. It's a fast, motivating win that builds AWS vocabulary and confidence, then step up to SAA-C03 once the platform feels familiar. This is also the natural next step if you already hold a data credential like the Databricks Data Engineer Associate — AI fluency on AWS complements it directly.

Heading into cloud engineering

Go straight for SAA-C03. It carries far more weight for architecture and engineering roles, and once you've passed it, AIF-C01 becomes a light add-on you can pick up quickly for AI breadth.
