Is the PSPO I exam hard?

Short answer: about as hard as PSM I, with a different twist. You need the Scrum Guide plus a product-and-value mindset — and 85% to pass.

Professional Scrum Product Owner I (PSPO I) from Scrum.org validates that you understand the Product Owner accountability in Scrum: maximising value, managing the Product Backlog and working with stakeholders.

The honest difficulty rating

Moderate. Everything in the Scrum Guide is fair game, plus product-management thinking that goes slightly beyond it: value, outcomes vs. output, empiricism in product decisions. People who act as "requirements managers" or proxy POs in their job often find the exam harder than expected.

The exam at a glance

What actually trips people up

One Product Owner, one Product Backlog

The Product Owner is one person, not a committee. Multiple teams on one product share one Product Backlog and one Product Owner. Options that split ownership are wrong.

Who decides what

The PO orders the Product Backlog; the Developers decide how much they take into a Sprint and how to do the work. The PO can delegate work but stays accountable.

Value over output

Questions about measuring success expect outcomes — customer satisfaction, usage, revenue — not velocity or number of features delivered.

Cancelling a Sprint

Only the Product Owner can, and only when the Sprint Goal becomes obsolete.

Rule of thumb: when unsure, pick the answer where the Product Owner maximises value and lets the Developers self-manage.

How long to study

One to three weeks. Read the Scrum Guide closely, add Scrum.org's Product Owner learning path articles, then do timed practice exams.

Either works. Take the one closer to your role — the knowledge overlaps heavily.

No, the assessment can be bought directly from Scrum.org.

Does PSPO I expire?

No. It's a lifetime certification.
